Penya was formed by Colombian singer/songwriter Angelica Lopez in 2009. Hailing from the city of Cartagena on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Angelica grew up immersed in local folklore, dancing Cumbia and Mapalé barefoot on the streets of her hometown. A professional singer by 17, Angelica toured to London where she quickly felt at home and put down roots, gradually forming Penya with like-minded friends she met whilst gigging on London’s Latin scene.
Penya’s songs, all originals composed by Angelica and band mate Jimmy le Messurier, are a seed-mix of styles that reflect her life experience. Penya want to take you on a journey through an enchanted landscape of time, space, and feelings.
Penya released an EP in 2011 followed by a series of singles leading up to their first LP to be released later this year.
