A lively and enjoyable programme, celebrating some of the best recital music written for the oboe, cor anglais & piano. This season marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Camden Town-born composer & conductor, Sir Eugène Goossens. One of the most famous British musicians of the first half of the twentieth century, Goossens’ credits include conducting the British première of The Rite of Spring in the presence of Stravinsky and Diaghilev. His virtuosic Concerto in One Movement was written for his brother, renowned oboist Léon Goossens, who himself created a successful oboe & piano arrangement of Mozart’s Oboe Quartet. It is also the 50th anniversary of Poulenc’s haunting Oboe Sonata – written shortly before his death – and the 200th anniversary of Reicha’s popular operatic Scène for cor anglais and piano. In the middle of this commemorative programme comes a wonderful Brahms Rhapsody played by outstanding pianist Dominic Saunders. Not to be missed!
